Partition tables

What are partition tables?
This concept belongs to the computer operating systems, during the installation of an operating system it need some index of the hard disk so that it can identify the available disk space and number of partitions created
in our hard disk.Such information stored and provided to the operating system by the partition tables created to/on the hard disk.

There are mainly two types of partition tables they are:
  • Master Boot Record
  • GPT( GUID partition table)
Master Boot Record
MBR partition table which is used by the Windows and by default every hard disk uses MBR partion table. Where we can create only 3 primary partitions and one logical partition. in logical partition we can divide our disk upto 24 parts. So finally we can divide our hard disk in MBR are 27 parts.

On this Partition Table Windows & Linux Can be installed but not Mac.

GPT
This partition table was introduced by the Mac OS X operating system since it is different form windows and linux an as well as the hardware it uses. For installing Mac operating system we need to change our partition table to GUID on GPT Windows cannot be installed. But in our daily life maximum every one uses windows OS then what about the users of Apple laptop / desktop ya there is a solution to them
  • First one is apple freely providing a software called BootCamp which is to be installed on mac OS so that one can install windows on to there system.
  • Second one is one who having interest towards what is the internal mechanism in the bootcamp can try to create a HYBRID PARTITION TABLE which is possible from GPT to MBR not vice-versa i.e.., we can create a MBR on GPT tabled Harddisk by using another command line software.

On this partition table Mac & Linux can be installed but not Windows.
